This is the football Season it is that time of year
When men in the pub talk football as they enjoy their beer
And look forward to September when one club will fly the winner’s flag
The team that wins the Premiership gives their fans the right to brag.
.
Their wives nicknamed the footy widows their husbands at the football club
Or after work talking football with their mates down at the local pub
They take football so seriously ’tis their passion in life
The footy fan loves his football club as much as his children or his wife.
.
And if their team lose at the weekend they feel and look so sad
What’s known as football addiction they seem to have it bad
They feel sad for their football team and the chance of three premiership points gone
But they cheer up and look forward to next weekend’s game as the working week wears on.
.
This is the football Season football has gone to their head
And their football scarves and beanies they even wear to bed
About their team they feel so passionate as if to them it did belong
And ’tis with delight and pride in victory that they sing the club song.

On a hot first day of Autumn, the sun blazed down on two teams not performing awfully well in the early days of the season. I was down in Sussex for The English Schools Cricket Association U-15 T20 finals at Arundel. I’m quite impressed with the number of teams I have been able to see on my visits to the finals over the last ten years! Arundel Town, itself, of course and Bognor Regis Town, Worthing, Chichester City, Lancing, Whitehawk, and Loxwood.

In today’s match, the first half was fairly even at 2-2, but after the break, the hosts romped away with the tie for only their second win of the season!

A pretty exhilarating encounter at Palmerston Park in the early kick-off. In ten devastating minutes midway through the first half, the hosts struck four times to lead 4-0 at the interval on a sunny and warm afternoon. The visitors pulled two goals back in the first five minutes of the second half and bagged a third with but fifteen minutes remaining. Despite their superiority, they were unable to draw level, despite one or two good chances! With John Main, who drove there and back in one day! There was a very pleasant and quite reasonable cafe adjacent to the ground and a part of a sports complex, and there, we dined pre-match.

The patronising FA transferred this meaningless joke of a match out to the provinces – how very kind of them – and then after a boring first half where England could easily have found themselves two or three goals adrift, they littered the second half with nine substitutions. The only brief, bright spark was Rashford’s well taken strike midway through the second half. A good humoured crowd took it all in their stride!

On a showery evening at Old Northamptonians Playing Fields, the hosts started nervously, but an early strike was like a shot in the arm and three additional second half goals decisively saw off the visitors. The crowd was swollen by a rugby barbecue gathering adjacent to the match. I doubt if many paid any entrance fee!

With Graeme Askham, John Main and Chris Berezai for the long journey to the north West tip of Wales and a visit to The Oval, the quaint and slightly eccentric home of Caernarfon Town. The only goal was scored in the final two minutes and was a little unfair on the hosts who had seemed the most likely to score – if anyone did! Perhaps a draw might have been a fairer result, but Chris was happy enough!

The water tower that feeds the Ford Tractor Plant dominates the skyline behind the main stand. The quality of the floodlighting was poor and the main stand itself was a good 25 yards from the pitch! The hosts might top their division, but in truth they were no match for their higher division visitors, who strolled through the game in second gear. With John Main.

On a blustery, squally evening, these two very evenly matched sides played out an enthralling encounter. The first half was goalless, but on the hour mark, the hosts scrambled a scruffy goal from a corner and looked to be able to keep the lead when the visitors had a penalty saved with fifteen minutes to go. However, two goals in the final ten minutes saw the visitors take the tie and a place in the next round! Good match!

Lunch first for Graeme and me at The Beefeater conveniently hard by The Brache Stadium (wasn’t there a team once, called Brache Sparta? Yes, said Break Sarney, but they didn’t play at this arena, but not far away!). The ground is 3G and belongs to Luton Town FC, but, as part of their partnership with Crawley Green FC, the latter are allowed to use the stadium for their home games. There was a very pleasant seated stand of brick and wood down one side and a covered standing area further down the same side and hard standing all round the pitch. In a very open game the hosts were careless in the extreme and the visitors took full advantage – and the three points!

Team sheets were available if you asked nicely and car parking at only one pound was very welcome, but why did they have to pack us all in behind one goal? I doubt that many teams this season will stop the Manchester United juggernaut and the hosts, with only one win under their belts this season, were mere cannon fodder. United scored five, but they could have had several more!

This was a family and friends affair and sadly, the match did not live up to expectations as the hosts dropped their first home points of the season. A new one hundred seater stand was opened at the ground, today, and we were in it!! After the match, the police inexplicably kept the home support bottled up inside the ground for over half an hour, while the few hundred away supporters were allowed out! Inane policing! With Graeme and John, son, Mike and grandson Freddie, eldest son Jim, brother in law, Allister and others, including Tilly, my great niece!

Chorley have enjoyed a cracking start to the season, winning their first seven league games and only faltering of late with two draws in the last four games. They top the division by a whopping nine points! However, as Graeme would point out, Bradford Park Avenue are one of the chasing pack and any slip-up by the Magpies and They’ll be in like a shot!
